Is your child suffering from parental alienation syndrome?

On Behalf of | Oct 27, 2020 | Child Custody And Visitation |

Tennessee parents cannot always let things go after a divorce. This is especially true if you must share custody of your children. In some cases, a vindictive parent may attempt to sew discord between you and your child.

This is parental alienation. If your child is a target of this, they may suffer from parental alienation syndrome which could have a big impact on their life.

PAS as a form of child abuse

Psychology Today discusses parental alienation syndrome, which stems from parental alienation. Courts often classify this as a form of child psychological abuse. This is due to the use of manipulation tactics that often cause permanent harm on a child’s psyche.

Long-term effects of PAS

PAS has long-term impacts and ramifications that can last well into their adult years if left unaddressed. Many PAS victims struggle to create bonds with their peers due to trust issues. These issues often impact their ability to create and maintain relationships, too.

PAS victims also tend to struggle with depression, anxiety and even post traumatic stress disorder. Due to these conditions, some PAS sufferers turn to substance use which can become substance abuse.

Even as a child, PAS has negative impacts. Many children of PAS suffer from intense feelings of guilt and internal conflict. They feel responsible for spurning the alienated parent and do not know why they acted in such a way. This guilt can manifest in self-critical behavior and thinking, which may impact their mental health in a crucial period of growth.

If you notice signs of PAS, it is better to act sooner rather than later. You may still have the ability to do something about it in its mildest form.
